Talmudic Law – a Lawyer’s Picnic

If ever there was any doubt that the Jewish people have a natural bent for the Law, consider the following two stories:

Now, I can’t claim to be an expert on the Talmud but, at least with respect to the eruv, at what point does this become farce? When does the spirit of the law enter into consideration? From the point of view of an admittedly ignorant outsider, this appears to be truly an absurd loophole.
